To throw out or not to throw out

So...going through the second shelf of the pantry. I have some rice, coucous, stuffing and Hamburger helper mixes that are 3 and 4 years old. If it were you, would you keep them or throw them out?

  1. You can tell alot by smelling them. When pasta, or rice is "bad" it is because it is rancid. Rice, if canned, has a 20 year shelf life.

  2. Personally, I would throw them away. 3 or 4 years is quite a long time. Would a food bank take them? If not, there's your answer.

  5. Just for the record I tried a Hamburger HElper that night and a mac and cheese deluxe dinner. The cheese sauce for the mac and cheese deluxe was burnt orange and crusty and gross, even more so than fresh mac and cheese, ha. So I tossed the sauce and used the macaroni and added fresh cheese to it. The Hamburger Helper smelled and looked and seemed fine but one kid thought it tasted a little off. Could of just been the flavor of the Hamburger Helper also. The rest of the old pkgs. went into the garbage can today, along with 3 yr. old spaghetti sauce. My pantry looks fabulous.

  6. Oh, and by the way Lisa, 36 is not old. It may feel old when you're by two 20 yr. olds. Stand next to 50 yr. olds. Talk to me about old when your face skin starts to sag, you can't remember why you have something in your hand and where you were going with it, and your kids don't know what the heck you're talking about when you make some reference to Donny Osmond being so popular(pre Dancing with the stars). You're a young chick!
